History

Karate comes from Japan and belongs to the category of the unarmed traditional fighting arts. Those arts appears for the first time at the 6th century a. C. Since then they evolve and change to finally end up to their modern forms. Well known and recognizable Karate style are Shotokan, Wado Ryu, Goju Ryu, Kyokushinkai and others. Shotokan is the most popular style of traditional karate in the world. The meaning of the word Karate is “empty-hand”. In a few words is the style of self-defense that can be practice by women and men. It first start as a physical exercise of the Bu dist monks in China. It was import to Okinawa islands and from there was import in Japan, at the first decades of the last century, by Gichin Funakoshi. His first exhibition was made at the “exhibition of physical fitness and education” in 1921 in Tokyo. The successor of the Imperial Throne Prince Chirochito, was impressed by the exhibition and suggested to by teach ed to the Universities. The art was spread rapidly to Japan and since 1950 to the rest of the world.
